Lawrence sits in Van Buren County fruit country, where the Paw Paw River loops between blueberry rows and grapevines and I-94 hums along a mile off. Dan's excavating works both halves of the calendar there: mowing, trimming and edging while the fields are green, then plowing and salting once the lake-effect bands push inland. A driveway opened down to the gravel before the school bus comes through is its own small reward. So is a lawn cut clean enough that the line along the walk looks drawn on. The pleasure of it is coming back week after week and leaving a place looking looked-after.
