In Laurium the winter is not an event, it is the address. Lake Superior throws snow across the Keweenaw by the foot, week after week, until the banks along the streets stand taller than a truck and the old sandstone houses wear white caps into April. Keweenaw Snow pushes it back and hauls it off — driveways, lots, and the walk between the door and the street — and treats the ice hiding underneath. Copper country storms have no interest in convenient hours, so routes run at night, again at first light, and again after that. Two hundred inches is a normal season here, and every inch of it has to go somewhere.
