L'Anse Township climbs from the head of Keweenaw Bay up through hardwood ridges toward Mount Arvon, the highest ground in Michigan, and snow off Lake Superior does not arrive here in inches so much as in feet. MBN Road and Landmanagement takes on that arithmetic with a plow — roads, driveways and turnarounds opened, banks pushed back before they can close a way in, walkways cut through after the wind has redrawn everything overnight. This far north a storm can bury a week of work in a single night, so the truck simply goes back out. There is a quiet pride in a stretch of road that stays passable through a January with no intention of letting up. L'Anse, Baraga, Skanee, Pequaming and the Baraga County backcountry are the working ground.
