The old rail line through Wadhams runs straight as a ruled edge out toward Avoca, and the country beside it is corn, beans and sugar beets to the horizon. Allen's Lawn Maintenance keeps the yards along those roads — mowing on a set rotation, trimming the fence lines, edging the drives, and clearing up what spring and autumn leave behind. When the fields go bare and white, those yards get plowed out, the walkways opened and the ice knocked down with salt. There is a good feeling in a lawn that is even end to end and a driveway that is black by breakfast. Kimball Township, Wadhams, Smiths Creek and out toward Port Huron.
