Late November in west Michigan has a sky all its own: a gray wall coming east off the big lake, twenty miles of open field to cross, and then it is snowing sideways in Jamestown. Winters here are built from many small storms rather than a few large ones, so plowing settles into a routine — drives and lots cleared, walkways opened, salt down where shade holds ice past noon. The rest of the year that same routine turns green, with mowing every week, sharp edges along the drives, trimming around posts and beds, and the cleanups that open and close the season.
