West of Jackson the road lifts a little toward Spring Arbor, and from the top of those rises the county lays out in squares of corn, woodlot and mown yard. Perry's Pinnacle Outdoor Service keeps its share of those squares in order: grass cut at a height that holds color through a dry August, trimming around every post and mailbox, edges kept crisp along the walks. The last pass of the day is always cleanup, drives blown off, clippings gone, gates latched behind. Autumn work moves to leaves, hauled clear of the turf before the rains pin them flat. It is ordinary work, and it is what makes a place look loved.
