Out toward the Brule the roads narrow and the pines lean in, and by February the banks stand shoulder-high on both sides of them. Ryan's Excavating pushes that snow back for a living — plowing driveways and lots around Iron River, opening camp two-tracks, hauling piles away when there is nowhere left to stack them. Big snow is a geometry problem before it is a labor problem: where the pile goes in December decides what March looks like. Sanding the icy pitch at the end of a drive is a small act that saves somebody a bad morning. When the truck pulls off, the ground is bare and the day can start.
