There is an hour in an Iron River January when the sky over Ice Lake is still more violet than blue and the only sound in the neighborhood is an engine warming up. That is when the plowing starts — driveways, lots and walkways opened, sand and salt laid down where a slope wants to throw a car sideways. Come June the same attention goes into mowing and trimming, grass brought back even across yards that spent five months buried. Machinery is the trade here, and machinery treated right is machinery that starts on the coldest morning of the year. The result is uncomplicated: clear pavement in winter, straight lines in summer, nothing left half-done.
