Summer comes late to Iron County and leaves in a hurry, so every green week here gets used. This is lawn work along the short blocks and storefront strips of Iron River — grass cut on schedule, edges trimmed in, clippings swept back off the walk instead of left to blow. Downtown the buildings sit low and the sky sits wide over them, and a mowed verge reads clean all the way to the corner. Trimming around sign posts, hydrants and stone takes patience, and patience is most of the job. By late afternoon the shadows lengthen off the old iron-country hills and the work stands there, plain and finished.
