This town got its name from the ore under it, and something of that stubborn character stayed above ground: Iron Mountain works, and it works in weather. Iron Mountain Services carries a winter share of that — plowing driveways and lots, clearing walks, and treating the glaze that forms on a Chapin Street grade when the temperature swings. The old Cornish Pump downtown once ran night and day to keep the mine dry; a snow route has the same unglamorous logic, showing up again and again so ordinary life is not interrupted. Storms here can drop through the night and keep going past noon, which means second passes and a truck that does not go home early. Clear pavement in a place this hard on pavement is a genuine accomplishment.
