April in Iosco is mud and meltwater and a first faint green under last year's brown. R Dixon & Son Lawn Service starts there — raking the yard out, clearing the sticks winter dropped, giving the grass room to come up. Then the season settles into mowing week by week through the country around Bell Oak, trimming close, sweeping the sidewalk bare. The land rolls a little here, glacial and uneven, so a mower has to be steered rather than simply driven, and the finish shows it either way. By October it runs backward again — leaves off, grass short, the yard set down for the cold.
