Monroe County is laid out in mile squares, and Ida sits in the middle of them, hedgerow to hedgerow, with the River Raisin drifting off northeast toward the lake. Across that grid the same properties ask for two entirely different kinds of care. April through November it is mowing on schedule, edging, trimming, and the heavier cleanups at both ends of the season. From December on it is plowing, clearing walks, and salting the shaded stretch of drive that never quite gives up its ice. Two trades, one set of neighbors, and the satisfaction of knowing every turnaround and culvert on the route by heart.
