Four in the morning on Waltz Road is a dark, flat, wide-open place to be, and that is exactly where the plow goes first. West of New Boston the fields run out for a mile at a stretch with nothing to slow a north wind, so drifts rebuild across the same three driveways every storm and get opened again anyway. Winter work here means plowing, hand-clearing steps and walkways, and salting the places that glaze over after dusk. Come May those same properties get a different sort of attention: mowing, edging, string trimming, and the seasonal cleanups that take a yard from ragged to sharp in one afternoon. Huron Township, Romulus, Brownstown and the roads between them, in whichever direction the year happens to be pointing.
