This corner of Ottawa County has grown things under glass for a long while, and in April the air inside a greenhouse smells like wet peat and geraniums while the fields outside are still the color of an old nickel. Greenline Inc. Landscaping and Garden Center works from that shelf of flats out into Hudsonville's yards — landscape planting and bed work, mowing and trimming through the season, cleanups when the beds are put down to sleep. Then the year turns and the same crews go to snow plowing and salting, drives and walks opened while it is still dark out. There is a whole arc in that: a bed laid out in May that closes in green by July, a walk scraped clear in February so somebody can reach the car without picking their way. Having the plants close at hand keeps the soil under the fingernails and the work honest to the ground it sits on.
