Oceola Township keeps its winters busy indoors — a gym lit up on a January night while the lot outside fills quietly with new snow. Oceola Community Center (Howell Recreation) handles the clearing that makes those evenings possible: the parking area pushed open, walks and entries scraped down so families can get from the car to the door without picking their way. Snow around Howell has a habit of arriving on a weekday afternoon, right ahead of everyone, which is exactly when the work has to happen. There is a plain civic pleasure in a cleared path to a warm building in the middle of a Michigan winter. That, in this corner of the county, is the job.
