In January the lake grows a village: shanties out on the ice, trucks parked in rows, a whole temporary town of ice fishing that appears for a few weekends and then packs up and goes home. Back on shore, everything else still has to be reachable. Gross Excavating & Landscaping handles snow around Houghton Lake — plowing drives, lanes and lots, opening the long sandy two-tracks that run back to the cottages, clearing walkways, and salting where ice takes hold. Deep-winter snow up here comes heavy and it comes often, so a lane that was perfectly fine yesterday is a wall of white this morning. Cutting that back open so somebody can reach their own front door is worth doing right.
