The Kalamazoo River runs black and steaming through Homer on the coldest mornings, while the blocks along Main Street take their snow all at once when a system swings up from the southwest. Clean Up Brothers works those blocks and the roads running out past them — plowing drives and lots, shoveling walks and steps clean, chipping the ice that builds where a downspout drains across concrete, salting behind it. The older houses here sit close to the street, so there is an art to putting snow where it will not be in the way come the next round. A clear path from the door to the curb is the entire point. The same rounds repeat until the river opens up in March.
