September on the gravel roads of Holly Township is goldenrod and dust and the smell of cut grass carrying farther than it did in June. Tomlin Enterprises is out in the middle of it, mowing lawns that end where the fence line and the field begin, running the edge along the drive, trimming around the posts, and leaving the walks swept. A property here might be a tidy village lot or a long apron of yard wrapped around a barn, and both get the same care about where the line falls. There is a real pleasure in the last cut of the year, when everything is short and level and the leaves haven't taken over yet. Then come the cleanups, and the place heads into winter looking looked-after.
