Saturdays around Holly start early, and by the time the freight has gone through the crossing and the brick of Battle Alley has warmed up, Chucks Cuts is already on the second yard. The routine doesn't vary much: mow, edge the sidewalk, trim the fence line and around the trees, sweep the walk and move on. Some lots out here are wide and open, some are hemmed in by old maples leaning over the property line, and the mower goes where it has to go. The satisfaction is in the small stuff — a line that runs true beside the concrete, a corner cut square instead of rounded off. When autumn arrives the same yards need the leaves taken off them, and that gets done too.
