East of town the land opens into farm sections and long straight roads, and when the wind crosses them with nothing to slow it down, snow that fell politely over the city gets rearranged into drifts by morning. Staat Enterprises works winter: plowing drives and lots, clearing walks, spreading salt, and dealing with the glaze that shows up in February when a thaw hands off to a hard freeze overnight.
