Turf is the whole subject here, and Hazel Park is a fitting place for it, a town that kept a racetrack out at its eastern edge and still measures itself in lawns you can cross in a dozen steps. Good turf comes from the unglamorous parts: cutting at the right height, feeding it when it asks to be fed, keeping weeds out of the thin ribbon along the drive. Around that runs everything else, trimming and edging, mulch and bed work, shrubs shaped, cleanups in spring and again in fall. By late June a lawn treated this way holds its color straight through the flat heat that settles over the county. Coming down the street, you can tell which yards have had someone paying attention.
