Rounds start early, before John R has much traffic on it. A route through Hazel Park is a long list of short stops, mow, trim the fence line, edge the walk, blow the clippings back off the concrete, repeated house after house until an entire street has been brought into line by noon. The yards here are small and thoroughly lived in, with swing sets, garden beds and a dog's worn track along the fence, and all of it gets worked around rather than over. Spring cleanup, mulch, hedge trimming and the long haul of autumn leaves fill out the rest of the calendar. The satisfaction is cumulative: by the end of a summer you can pick out the route from the corner.
