There is a week in November when the last leaves come off the maples and the first salt goes down, and one truck has to be ready for both. That is the shape of a year in Hazel Park: mowing and trimming from April through the humid stretch of July, cleanups that clear the beds and haul the leaves away, then plowing, shoveled walks and ice control on driveways barely wider than a car. Not quite three square miles between Eight Mile and the I-696 trench doesn't sound like much until a storm has filled every alley apron on the block. The work is finished when a homeowner steps outside and finds the morning already handled, a cut lawn in summer or a clear drive in February.
