The Kid Who Shovels

About The Kid Who Shovels

Some January mornings in Hastings the snow is still coming down while the streetlights are on and the buses are already rolling. The Kid Who Shovels is out in it — walks, front steps, porches and the width of a driveway cleared by hand while most of town is still deciding whether to get up. Hand work reaches the places a plow blade cannot: the mail path, the tight walk between house and garage, the stoop where a slip actually happens. There is a real pride in coming back at the end of a street and seeing every path opened. The rounds cover Hastings and the closest edges of Barry County.
