In Forsyth Township the snow starts in November and is still lying in the shade of the pines when the geese come back. The Forsyth Township Snowmobile and ATV Club knows that ground the way only people who cross it all winter can — where the drifts build, where the wind scours a stretch bare, which approaches fill in first after a night of lake-effect. That knowledge goes to work clearing snow: opening drives and lots, pushing banks back off the corners, keeping walks and entries passable through storms that arrive in sequence rather than one at a time. Around Gwinn a plowed way out is not a convenience, it is how the day begins. There is something good about the sound of it at first light — engines, scraping steel, and then quiet on a place that is finally open.
