The year in Grosse Pointe Woods comes in two halves, and J. Everett and Sons works both of them. From April to the leaf drop it is mowing and trimming and edging along Marter Road, the route running like clockwork. Then the light goes short and the same trucks turn to plowing driveways, shoveling walks and salting the ice off the front steps. Knowing a property in June makes it far easier to find its edges under a foot of snow in February — where the drive turns, where the walk gives way to lawn. One crew, one address book, two seasons of it, across the Woods and the towns beside it.
