By February the snow piles at the edges of Greenville's lots have their own geology — layered, gray at the base, refrozen a dozen times over. North Land Excavating keeps those lots working through it: plowing the open ground, pushing and stacking banks where they will not block sightlines, opening walks, laying salt on the refreeze that follows every thaw. Snow here does not arrive all at once; it comes in installments, and the ground has to be ready for the next one. Big equipment earns its keep in a long west Michigan winter.
