There is a week each spring, usually near the end of March, when the ground out by Blandford lets go all at once and the whole west edge of Grand Rapids smells like wet earth. New Life Lawn Care begins its year right there — raking out the matted grass, carrying off whatever winter left behind, and giving the lawn edges a defined line again before the first cut of the season. From there it runs on weekly mowing, trimming and edging until the maples finish dropping in November. The soil on this side of town is sandy and quick to dry, so the cut stays high through midsummer and the color holds longer for it. Watching a tired lawn come back green is a fine reason to keep doing this.
