About Jay's Lawn Care and snowplowing

February mornings on the ridge above Burton Street begin black and stay that way for hours. Jay's Lawn Care and snowplowing is out in them, pushing driveways down to the surface, cutting a shovel-width path to the front door, and salting the steps where yesterday's melt froze back overnight. Grand Rapids rarely delivers its snow all at once; more often it arrives two inches at a time, again and again, which means going back out. The reward is small and entirely real — a car that backs out without spinning, a mail carrier who does not have to guess where the walk is. That is the whole of the job, and it is enough.
