Lawns of Distinction

About Lawns of Distinction

East of the city the ground rolls toward the Thornapple, and the driveways grow long, curved, and steep enough to matter in January. Lawns of Distinction plows them — pushing down to pavement, opening the turnaround, salting the pitch where a car would otherwise slide back the way it came. Out past Cascade the tree cover holds snow and then drops it in a lump on a lane that was clear ten minutes ago, so a second pass is part of the plan rather than an apology. Freezing rain is the harder opponent here, and it gets treated before it has a chance to set. The measure of a good night is a driveway that looks like the storm went around it.
