At three in the morning Washington Avenue is empty, and Dewey Hill is only a pale shape across the water with the fountain silent under snow. Jakes Outdoor Services is out in those hours doing snow removal — driveways, entries and lots opened before Grand Haven has any reason to be awake. Downtown snow poses its own puzzle: narrow aprons, sidewalks along the storefronts, and nowhere obvious to put the pile. Solving it neatly, storm after storm, is the point of the whole operation. The reward is a town that gets up, steps out, and finds the way already clear.
