Long before the storefronts on Saginaw Street unlock, the plow lights are already moving. Doan's Landscape is a snow removal outfit in Grand Blanc, where January arrives on a west wind and leaves the driveways under six inches of quiet. The work is simple to name and hard to do right: clear the apron, square the corners, open the walk so the first person out the door in the dark never has to think about it. There is real satisfaction in a lot that looks swept rather than scraped. Grand Blanc wakes up, and the day just begins.
