Lake-effect doesn't ask permission. It comes off Lake Michigan twenty-odd miles west, sets up in a narrow band, and lays six inches on Georgetown Charter Township between midnight and four while the next county over gets an inch. Holp it Snows is awake for that — plowing drives and lots, shoveling steps and walks, salting the ridge at the end of the driveway where the county plow leaves its windrow. The work gets finished before the alarm clocks go off, which is the entire point of it. A cleared drive at daybreak and no memory of who made it that way is a fine thing to leave behind.
