North of town, where the Pigeon River Country begins, elk step down into the openings at first light and fog sits in the low ground until the sun burns it off. Mighty Moose Maintenance Men start about then — plowing drives and salting ice through the cold months, mowing and trimming and cleaning up once the frost is finally out of the ground. Winter here is long enough to be a career of its own; summer is short enough to be a sprint. Both get run at full tilt. There is something good about laying the first set of tracks down a road at dawn.
