Take the road east out of Galesburg toward Augusta and the open fields give way to oak and sand ridge, ground that greens up a week later than the yards in town. JJS Lawn Maintenance runs that stretch in both directions and both halves of the year. In April the mowers come out for the first pass of the season, when the grass is thick and wet and the machine has to be driven slowly and honestly to leave a clean cut. Through summer it is trimming, edging and keeping the height right for the heat; in winter it is a plow blade and a bag of salt, drives opened before anyone has to think about them. A yard mowed straight and a drive cleared to the pavement are the same promise, made in different weather.
