The first real snow usually comes over the Cannonsburg hills in November, quiet and heavier than anyone remembers. Monsma Landscape and Maintenance is already out in it before the school buses run, blade down on Forest Hills driveways, shovel working the steps, salt going onto the slick strip by the garage door. There is a plain kind of pride in a cleared drive at dawn — the day starts on time because somebody else did not sleep in. The warm months bring the other half of the trade: mowing on rotation, edging, trimming, and the big rake-out at either end of the growing season. One place, all twelve months, cared for by people who know its slopes.
