The old rail line still cuts its diagonal across Fenton, and in late August the grass along it stands tall and gold while the town lawns stay short. The Lawn Enforcement handles the short ones — mowing on a set week, trimming close to posts and foundations, edging drives and walks until every line looks deliberate. Heat waves and cloudbursts trade places all summer here, and a lawn kept on schedule takes both of them better. Fall means the cleanup; winter means the plow, the drive pushed back before daylight and the walk salted behind it. The name is a joke; the straight lines are not.
