Lake-effect finds Fennville after dark, most often — the wind swings northwest off the big water and by midnight the orchard rows are only shapes under snow. Matt's Xcavating is running by then, plowing driveways and lots, cutting them wide enough that the next storm has somewhere to go, and back-dragging clean at the garage doors. Walkways get shoveled and the slick spots get treated so the morning starts on solid footing. Some nights it is three inches and done; some nights the wind keeps refilling the same drive until sunrise. Either way the goal never changes: black pavement before the first car needs to move.
