February around Evergreen has a habit: the midday sun gets strong enough to soften the snowpack, then the temperature drops back through the floor after dark and locks the whole thing down again. Ice Dam Guys works inside that swing — clearing snow off drives and walkways, breaking up the crust and ice that build where the melt runs and refreezes, and spreading de-icer where people keep losing their footing at the bottom of a step. Late winter is when the shoveling turns heavy and the footing turns untrustworthy, and that is exactly when the calls come. Every load moved is one less frozen rut to drive over for the rest of the season. Quiet work, but the kind everyone notices the morning it is finally done.
