Snow in Edwards does not politely wait for daylight. It comes down through the pines at two in the morning, fills a two-track by four, and by six somebody has to get to work in West Branch. That is the hour Edwards Tow and Plow keeps — plowing driveways and turnarounds, opening the apron at the end of the road where the county plow left its berm, shoveling the steps, and putting down salt where the ice sets up hard. Long private drives are the norm out here, and they get cleared the whole way, not just enough to squeeze a car through. Waking up to an open drive is a small mercy in a northern winter, and it is the entire point of the job.
