Eastpointe answered to the name East Detroit for a long stretch, and the city line at Eight Mile still runs like a seam right along its southern edge. East Detroit Services works that seam and everything north of it, out through the grid of narrow drives and detached garages. Before dawn after a storm, the plow makes its rounds while the streetlights are still orange on the snow, so the first shift out the door finds pavement instead of a wall. Come the green half of the year the same trucks return for mowing, trimming and edging, keeping the front yards trim right up to the sidewalk squares. It is a working town, and this is working-town care: show up, clear it, cut it, move on.
