September brings students back to the college on the edge of Dowagiac and turns the maples along the side streets a slow orange. Vaughns Lawns is out in that light, mowing lawns that have started growing again after the August heat, trimming the edges tight, blowing the first leaves off the walks. It is satisfying work in the cool part of the year — the grass cuts clean, the lines stay crisp, and a finished yard holds its look for days. Spring and summer run the same route on a faster clock, week in and week out. Whatever the month, the yard gets left better than it was found.
