Northwest of Dowagiac the land opens into water — Round, Dewey, Magician — and the cottage lawns run right down to the docks. Moreno Lawn Care keeps them cut through the loud green weeks of July, mowing and trimming close to seawalls and fire rings, blowing the clippings back off the launches. Then the cars go home, the shoreline empties, and the work turns to snow: drives opened, walks cleared, a plowed lane so somebody can come check on a place in February. A shut-up cottage still needs a way in. The same yards, watched over, whichever way the year is leaning.
