In June the older Detroit blocks go deep green — maples closing over the street, grass medians running down the middle of the boulevards. A.C Landscaping works in that shade, mowing, edging and trimming back the growth that would otherwise swallow a walkway by July. Bungalow yards here are small and particular, and a small yard rewards patience: corners squared, borders kept honest, the strip between sidewalk and curb cut as carefully as the front. Somebody planted these lawns a long time ago, and somebody has to keep them going. When the mower shuts off and the block goes quiet again, the line of fresh-cut yards runs all the way to the corner.
