Four in the morning, and the Grand River is a black seam under the fog out at Delta Mills, everything hushed except a plow blade finding pavement. D&S Lawn, Tree, & Snow works both halves of the Delta Charter Township year — plowing drives and clearing walks when the storms come through, mowing and trimming once the ground softens and greens. Mid-Michigan winter doesn't announce itself; it arrives grey and settles in, and a driveway has to be open before the first car backs out of it. Come June the same routes turn into green lanes and the day is spent behind a mower on flat, sandy ground. Two seasons, one map, learned turn by turn.
