First frost in northern Muskegon County shows on the hay fields before it touches anything else — a white skin over the low ground that burns off by nine. Red Barn Group LLC watches for it, because it marks the hinge in their year between mowing Dalton Township's lawns and clearing its driveways. Through the warm months they cut, trim and clean up; through the cold ones they push snow off drives and open the walks so people can get out. The township is spread out — farm frontage, woodlots, long approaches — and every one of those approaches still has to be reachable in February. Keeping them that way, whatever the calendar says, is the job.
