Few places in Michigan take winter as seriously as the high ground around Vanderbilt, where the sky can dump snow for three days and then clear to a hard field of stars. Northern Sky Services plows through it — driveways, camp roads, lots and entries in Corwith Township and the country north of Gaylord. Elk winter in these woods and the drives run long and unlit, so the work happens by headlight, one turnaround at a time. Banks get pushed back before they can narrow a drive to a single lane, and the icy pitch near the road gets sand and salt. Snow removal for a township where the season is the main event.
