The old railway line still runs east out of Coopersville, and in spring the grass along it greens up before anything else in the county does. That is the signal Phil's lawn service waits for: time to mow, edge, trim, and clear away everything the thaw uncovered. Come December the same properties need a different tool — plowing, shoveling the walks, putting down salt where the ice wants to hold. Two seasons, one habit of being there when it matters, whether that means a Tuesday cut or a Sunday before dawn. Around here people know their neighbors, and the yards show it.
