September cools Commerce Township from the top down — mornings sharp, afternoons still generous, goldenrod along the roadsides and the lakes holding summer longer than the air does. Sue's Landscaping, Inc. mows straight through it, with trimming, edging and cleanups as the oaks and maples begin to let go. Fall grass grows slower and greener, and a lawn cut in that light looks about as good as a lawn ever looks. Beds get cleared, mulch gets freshened, leaves and clippings come off the walks. Then the last cut of the season, and the yard goes quiet until spring asks again.
