February arrives in Commerce Township on a west wind, dry and quick, dusting Glengary Road before the first porch light comes on. Allor Outdoor Services meets it with plow and salt — driveways and lots opened, walkways cleared, ice knocked back before anybody has to think about it. Come April the blades give way to mowers, and the calendar turns to weekly cutting, trimming, edging and hauling off whatever winter left behind. There is a plain pride in pavement that is black and open at six in the morning, and in a lawn that stands even and green by June. Between the lakes and the subdivisions this township only runs at two speeds, and this is outdoor work for both of them.
